Innovation, Inspiration & Creativity

In our hyperconnected world, it's easy to get caught up in the relentless pursuit of productivity and efficiency. Don’t we all try to empty out some of our inbox as we wait in line at the pharmacy, or fill our quiet moments with a podcast we’ve been told to listen to? We occupy so much of our limited time with tasks, meetings, and digital distractions. Where is our time and space for creativity and inspiration? As Edward Tenner explores in his book "The Efficiency Paradox," our relentless pursuit of efficiency can sometimes hinder innovation and creativity. What is one supposed to do about such a paradox? How can we set ourselves up to break free from this cycle and make more space for inspiration in our lives?

Creativity significantly affects our lives, and it's crucial to rediscover ways to incorporate it into our daily routines.

1. Allow Your Mind to Wander

Creativity often emerges when our minds have the freedom to roam. Yet, if we constantly fill our time and surroundings with distractions, habitually turning to our phones in quiet moments, we forgo the opportunity to tackle current challenges, think about our relationships or career paths, or consider our personal journeys.

Some of the most groundbreaking ideas and insights surface when we grant ourselves the liberty, time, and stillness to venture into deeper thought.

Imagine taking a walk in your neighborhood, letting your mind wander as you pass familiar sights and sounds. You might suddenly come up with a solution to a problem that's been bothering you for days, or you might be sparked with a new idea for a project at work, at your home, or something to do to connect with your partner or children. These moments of clarity, creativity, and reflection are points of inspiration and value. Giving yourself permission for unstructured time can lead to unexpected discoveries and insight, and can help you see things from a new perspective. You might remember a cherished memory from your past, sparking a new idea or connection that can enrich your life in an unexpected way.

Rather than listening to a podcast or scheduling a phone call during your commute, give yourself the gift of quiet. You might be pleasantly surprised by the unexpected and remarkable rewards that await.

2. Detach from Your Phone

Detaching from your phone might feel impossible, however it is a powerful way to enhance your creativity and find inspiration in unexpected places. In today's digital age, our phones are constant sources of distraction, pulling us away from the present moment and hindering our ability to think deeply and creatively, often anchoring us to the experiences and ideas of others instead of our own.

By disconnecting from your phone for each day at some point, you can allow your mind to fully engage with the world around you. Use this time to focus on other activities that stimulate your creativity such as reading a book, going for a walk, or engaging in a hobby.

When we disconnect from our devices, we give ourselves the space to be more present. Freed, if only for a little while, from the incessant barrage of notifications and messages, your mind is liberated to explore fresh avenues of thought and embrace the present moment more deeply. Detaching from your mobile can help you cultivate a deeper connection with the world around you, allowing you to engage more fully with the people and experiences in your life.

3. Seek Inspiration from Nature

In addition to finding a peaceful escape from daily life, nature inspires artists, writers, and innovators with a source of creativity that has inspired them for centuries. “What is the good of your stars and trees, your sunrise and the wind, if they do not enter into our daily lives?” - E.M. Forster.

Research has shown that spending time in nature can have a profound impact on our mental well-being and our creativity. Those who spend time in nature can experience a significant boost in imaginative ability and problem-solving. Whether you're taking a leisurely stroll in the park, hiking in the mountains, or simply sitting outside and enjoying the fresh air, immersing yourself in nature can help clear your mind and open yourself up to new ideas and perspectives. The sights, sounds, smells, sunlight, and fresh air have the power to stimulate your senses and inspire you.

In addition to its creative benefits, spending time in nature can also have a positive impact on your overall health and well-being. It is understood that spending time in nature can help reduce stress, improve mood, and boost cognitive function. So next time you're feeling stuck or in need of inspiration, consider simply stepping outside for a bit. You might be surprised at the creative ideas that come to you when you take the time to connect with nature.

4. Make Time for Intentional Creativity

In the words of Pablo Picasso, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." Making time for creativity is about reconnecting with that innate imagination that we all possess. Engaging in creative activities can have numerous benefits for our well-being, both mental and emotional. Who couldn’t use higher levels of happiness and fulfillment in their lives?

Allowing time in your day exclusively for these pursuits is a great way to keep your creative energy flowing. When you devote time to inventive activities, you express yourself in new and meaningful ways, regardless of what you are writing, painting, playing, or creating.

Creative outlets are understood to enhance cognitive function and problem-solving skills in addition to their emotional benefits. Stuck in a rut? Consider setting aside some time for something different for a change.

5. Plan for the Future

When we allow creativity and inspiration into our lives, we also open ourselves up to new possibilities for the future. Whether it's planning for our homes, trips, careers, families or hobbies, creativity can help us visualize and create the life and experiences we desire. Genuine innovation and inspiration often stem from breaking away from established processes, routines, and mindsets.  Innovation extends to how we interact with others, form relationships, and embark on new adventures.

By embracing a mindset of creativity and openness to new ideas, we can unlock new possibilities and enrich both our personal and professional lives. As Steve Jobs said, "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." Innovation often comes from unexpected sources, so it's crucial to be open to new ideas.

The impact of creativity on our lives is real and tangible. In the business world, embracing creativity can be the difference between staying stagnant and progressing. Innovation and creativity are also key drivers of success in personal endeavors. Whether it's starting a new hobby, tackling a project, or simply finding new ways to approach everyday tasks, creativity can bring a sense of joy and fulfillment to our lives.

By making time for creativity and allowing ourselves to be inspired, we can enrich our lives and open ourselves up to new possibilities. As Elizabeth Gilbert, author of "Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear," puts it, "A creative life is an amplified life. It's a bigger life, a happier life, an expanded life, and a hell of a lot more interesting life."
